FCT CP warns officers against illegal detention, extortion

The FCT Commissioner of Police, Ajao S. Adewale, has issued a directive to men and officers of the command against illegal detention of suspects and meddling into civil matters, especially land disputes and extortion in the territory.

CP Adewale, while speaking with newsmen on Saturday, said the warning followed reports of unlawful detention for bailable offences, extortion of complainants and suspects as well as police interference in civil cases.

He described such actions as violations of constitutional rights as directed by the IGP.

He, therefore, directed the Area Commanders, DPOs and HODs to immediately review and release suspects held for minor, bailable offences upon proper documentation and surety verification.

He emphasized that bail was free and any officer found collecting money for bail or documentation will face strict disciplinary action.

”Officers must not intervene in civil matters, particularly land related disputes, which lie outside their jurisdiction. And any officer that is found in violation and supervisors who fail to enforce this directive, will be held accountable,” he said.

The CP also condemned the demand for payment before investigating cases, warning that such acts constitute extortion and abuse of office, and the offenders would be prosecuted.

The police commissioner also cautioned members of the public against offering bribes to police officers, which act, he said was a criminal offence under Section 118 of the Penal Code Act.

He also advised them not to misuse the police for debt recovery or settling personal vendettas.
