The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has taken decisive action against traffic violators, impounding nearly 300 vehicles for various offenses, including illegal parking, road unworthiness, and unregistered taxi services.
This crackdown comes as part of a renewed effort to clean up the city of Abuja and ensure strict adherence to traffic rules and regulations.
Abdulateef Bello, the Director of the FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Service (DRTS), revealed these developments during enforcement operations across the city.
Those whose vehicles have been impounded now face Mobile Court proceedings.
The FCTA’s renewed commitment to enforcing traffic regulations follows a directive from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who is determined to eliminate nuisances and traffic violations within the city.
Bello emphasized that the recent review of motor vehicle operation laws in the FCT, coupled with immediate prosecution through the FCT Mobile Court, will significantly reduce traffic violations.
Bello urged all road users to obey traffic rules and regulations while highlighting ongoing collaboration with the Transport Secretariat to implement policies aimed at achieving zero tolerance for traffic violations in the FCT.
He stated, “We are working with the Transportation Secretariat who are in charge of policy formulation and implementation for this review.
The Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike, on assuming office, observed high levels of nuisances in the city and throughout the territory.
He has made it clear that the territory must be free of these nuisances within a specified period.”
Furthermore, Bello expressed confidence that as mass transit operations expand, unregistered vehicles entering the city will diminish.
He also mentioned that fines for traffic offenses will be increased, serving as a deterrent to potential violators once the transport regulations are updated.
Additionally, the FCTA plans to crack down on agencies that habitually park vehicles on green verges and walkways.
Bello concluded by highlighting the joint task team formed with security agencies to clean the city and remove vehicles causing obstructions and nuisances.
The FCTA’s commitment to a cleaner and safer Abuja is evident, and they aim to achieve this goal swiftly.
