Residents of Lagos are growing increasingly worried over the safety of bombs and other weapons stored at the Lagos Air Force Base, which has been without electricity for more than 16 days.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the military facility was disconnected by Ikeja Electric over a reported N4 billion debt, leading to fears that prolonged darkness could affect the cooling systems needed to store high-explosive armaments safely.
The situation escalated when armed Air Force personnel allegedly stormed Ikeja Electric’s offices, vandalizing property and holding staff, journalists, and visitors hostage.
Reports indicate that military personnel also seized about 40 company vehicles and detained some staff members.
Efforts to resolve the crisis included a meeting between Air Force officials, Ikeja Electric, and Lagos State government representatives.
However, power had yet to be restored as of yesterday, raising concerns about a possible explosion.
A military source warned that if cooling systems fail, the heat could trigger a devastating blast.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports suggest some military personnel are considering relocating their families from Lagos.
Calls for an investigation have intensified, with 135 human rights organizations urging President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly to probe the military’s actions.
Efforts to get an official response from the Nigerian Air Force were unsuccessful.
However, security experts warn that unless the power issue is resolved quickly, the situation could pose a major risk to Lagos residents.
