The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has granted provisional licenses to 11 new private universities across Nigeria, in a move aimed at bolstering the nation’s tertiary education sector.
Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, made the announcement following the FEC meeting, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing access to quality higher education.
He also revealed that while a moratorium has been imposed on further licenses, institutions already in advanced approval stages will proceed unaffected.
The newly approved universities include New City University in Ayetoro, Ogun State; University of Fortune in Igbotako, Ondo State; Eranova University in Mabushi, FCT; and Minaret University in Ikirun, Osun State.
Also included are Abubakar Toyin University in Oke-Agba, Kwara State; Southern Atlantic University in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State; Lens University in Ilemona, Kwara State; and Monarch University in Iyesi-Ota, Ogun State.
Additionally, the approvals extend to Tonnie Iredia University of Communication in Benin City, Edo State; Isaac Balami University of Aeronautics and Management in Lagos; and Kevin Eze University in Mgbowo, Enugu State.
Minister Alausa affirmed that the FEC rigorously evaluates universities based on stringent standards and investment criteria to ensure the delivery of quality education.
With these latest approvals, Nigeria now boasts over 150 private universities, reflecting a significant surge in response to the escalating demand for higher education nationwide.
In a related development, the FEC also endorsed a policy to bolster local manufacturing of leather goods and footwear, earmarking N500 million to empower women in this pivotal sector.
Minister of Women Affairs, Hajia Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, disclosed the initiative, underscoring its potential to stimulate economic growth through increased women’s participation in local production.
“This initiative marks a pivotal step in encouraging women’s involvement in an industry poised for substantial economic gains,” Sulaiman-Ibrahim remarked.
She emphasized that the intervention is designed to equip female entrepreneurs with essential resources to expand their enterprises and contribute meaningfully to the national economy.
Moreover, the policy aims to boost Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by fortifying local manufacturing capacities, thereby fostering sustainable economic development.
