The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, October 1, 2025, a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced this in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on Monday.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians at home and in the diaspora on what he described as a “historic milestone” in the nation’s democratic journey, urging citizens to remain steadfast in patriotism, unity, and resilience.
He said, “Since 1960, the spirit of unity and resilience has kept us together as one indivisible nation. I urge all Nigerians to continue upholding these values as we work towards a stronger and more prosperous country.”
The minister further called on Nigerians to sustain their faith in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which he said is anchored on national rebirth, economic growth, and collective prosperity.
According to him, with collective effort and the cooperation of citizens, Nigeria will continue to advance in peace, progress, and development.
“I wish all Nigerians a happy and memorable 65th Independence Day celebration,” Tunji-Ojo added.
Nigeria gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, and has since marked the day with national celebrations, reflection, and calls for unity. This year’s commemoration comes at a time the country faces economic challenges, security concerns, and renewed debates on governance reforms.
