In a recent statement, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has refuted claims of negotiations with bandits for the release of kidnapped varsity students.

He strongly criticized Zamfara State Governor Dr. Dauda Lawal for accusing the federal government of playing politics with the rescue efforts.

Idris emphasized that no federal government officials have engaged in negotiations with the bandits responsible for the abduction of Federal University Gusau students.

Instead, he urged Governor Lawal and the public to appreciate the security operatives’ relentless efforts to secure the students’ release.

The minister clarified that federal government institutions are legally empowered to take action to ensure the safe return of citizens taken hostage, even without external prompting.

He highlighted that the government remains committed to exploring all available avenues to de-escalate tensions and restore peace in communities plagued by banditry.

Idris also expressed openness to community-led dialogues, similar to successful initiatives in other regions, as long as they contribute to peace and security.

He stressed that national security matters should not be clouded by political differences or personal disputes, as demoralizing troops and hindering government efforts must be avoided.

In conclusion, the federal government reaffirmed its dedication to addressing the ongoing challenges of banditry, kidnapping, and criminality.

Minister Idris called for unity among all stakeholders and urged everyone to collaborate in finding lasting solutions to the nation’s security problems.
