The Federal Government has rejected claims that Nigeria’s security architecture has collapsed following last week’s deadly attack in Maiduguri, insisting that security agencies are intensifying efforts to safeguard lives and property across the country.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said this during an interview with the BBC, where he maintained that while challenges persist, the nation’s security operatives have not failed in their responsibilities.
“I don’t think they failed. I think that more work needs to be done,” the minister said, stressing that “Nigerian security agencies are working around the clock to ensure that this does not happen again.”
His remarks come amid heightened concerns over insecurity, particularly in the North-East, following renewed attacks in Borno State.
Idris noted that despite recent incidents, Maiduguri and its environs had witnessed significant improvements in peace and stability over time, attributing the progress to sustained military and intelligence operations.
He disclosed that the government was implementing deliberate and coordinated strategies to strengthen intelligence gathering, prevent future attacks, and enhance the overall security framework.
“The government is putting a lot of attention. The reform agenda of the president is aimed at ensuring that Nigerians are safe and that this does not happen again,” he added.
The minister further linked the administration’s broader reform policies to improved national security and global perception, noting that ongoing efforts by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu were already yielding positive outcomes.
According to him, the President’s international engagements have reinforced Nigeria’s historical, cultural, and economic ties with partners such as the United Kingdom, with expectations of deeper collaboration.
On global issues, Idris reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to supporting international stability, particularly in the energy sector, amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
“Nigeria is ever ready to contribute to energy security around the world. Whatever Nigeria can do to ease tension, it will do. The world needs oil, and Nigeria is there,” he said.
He reiterated the Federal Government’s resolve to sustain reforms, strengthen security operations, and position Nigeria as a responsible global partner, assuring citizens of continued efforts to guarantee safety nationwide.
