The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, has distributed 58,500 metric tonnes of milled rice across the nation.

PLATFORM TIMES reports that the move was  to address rising food prices and bolster food security.

The  Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari announced this  during a ministerial sectoral update marking President Bola Tinubu’s first year in office.

Speaking at the event in Abuja on Monday,  Kyari emphasized the ministry’s commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes the enhancement of agriculture to achieve food security, infrastructure improvement, and better transportation.

He highlighted the government’s broader objective to enhance governance for more effective service delivery.

According to him, a key highlight of the ministry’s efforts includes the inauguration of dry-season farming.

This initiative involved cultivating 118,657 hectares of wheat across 15 states, thereby promoting year-round agricultural activities.

The minister reported that 107,429 wheat farmers received support in the form of agricultural inputs, resulting in an impressive output of 474,628 metric tonnes of wheat.

He added that the  output is estimated to have injected approximately N309 billion into the Nigerian economy.

He stated that in line with a presidential directive, the ministry released 42,000 metric tonnes of assorted food commodities from the federal government’s strategic food reserve.

These commodities were handed over to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for distribution, aiming to provide immediate relief to communities facing food shortages.

He said the ministry has undertaken efforts to fortify crops with vitamin A micronutrients to improve the nutritional content and health benefits of food commodities,.
