Federal Government announced plans on Friday to conduct a comprehensive headcount of Almajiris across the country.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Schools Feeding, Dr. Yetunde Adeniji, aims to integrate Almajiris into the National Home-grown School Feeding Programme (NHGSFP).

During a courtesy call on the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi  Sule, Dr. Adeniji emphasized the government’s commitment to broadening the reach of the school feeding programme.

The initiative seeks to extend its benefits to traditionally itinerant Islamic students, the Almajiris, addressing their nutritional and educational needs.

Governor Abdullahi A. Sule, expressing his support for the initiative, urged the Federal Government to prioritize the inclusion of Almajiris in the homegrown school feeding plan.

He highlighted the potential of this program to uplift Almajiris from destitution, providing them with proper nutrition and education, effectively taking them off the streets.

Recognizing the importance of collaboration, Governor Sule called for the Office of the SSA to work in tandem with Northern States and relevant institutions to conduct a comprehensive census of Almajiri schools.

The aim is to gather accurate data on destitute children, facilitating their seamless enrollment in the NHGSFP.

This announcement follows commendation from the Executive Governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani, who praised the proactive methods of Dr. Adeniji in aligning with institutions and states to ensure the success of the program.

Governor Sani affirmed the commitment of Kaduna State government to partner with the SSA’s office, further enhancing the nutritional value of the program and contributing to its overall success.
