The Federal Government has issued a directive mandating all Vice-Chancellors, Rectors, and Provosts of Nigerian tertiary institutions to publish key institutional data on their official websites by May 31, 2025, in a bid to promote transparency and good governance.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Morufu-Tunji Alausa, emphasized that the move is designed to enhance accountability within the country’s higher education system.
According to a statement from the Ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, the institutions are required to disclose detailed information regarding their budgetary allocations, research grants, and student population.
The Ministry’s directive mandates that institutions publish a breakdown of their Annual Budgetary Allocation, clearly outlining expenditures in three critical areas: personnel costs, overhead costs, and capital expenditure.
Additionally, universities must reveal their Research Grant Revenue from the previous year, detailing the source of these funds.
The grants should be divided into two categories: those from domestic sources such as local industries, government agencies, or foundations, and those from international sources like foreign institutions and development partners.
Institutions are also required to display their TETFund Allocation for the current year, showing the total amount received for academic and infrastructural development.
Another crucial disclosure is the Endowment Fund, which reflects funds donated or invested to secure the institution’s long-term financial health.
This must be updated quarterly to ensure the public is kept informed of any changes.
Furthermore, tertiary institutions are to provide data on their Total Student Population, distinguishing between undergraduate and postgraduate students, which will give a comprehensive overview of enrollment
figures.
The Ministry has emphasized that all the disclosed information must be presented in a user-friendly and easily accessible format, ensuring that stakeholders—such as parents, students, and other interested parties—can easily locate and understand the data.
To ensure adherence to this new policy, the Ministry of Education will conduct periodic reviews of institutional websites. Institutions found in violation of the directive will face appropriate administrative actions.
These reviews will not only assess compliance but also inform future policy decisions aimed at promoting transparency in the nation’s tertiary education sector.
