Delta state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Chief Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku (JP) has expressed disappointment at the federal government policy on the economy, saying the Policy is shocking the workers, and they are dying just as he worries at the mute of the state governor over provisions of Palliative to state for too long.
The NLC expressed this disappointment during the nationwide peaceful protest when expressing the grievance and pains workers are going through by the removal of fuel subsidy without adequate provision to cushion the effect at Asaba.
The chairman noted that the peaceful protest was against the bad policies of the federal government that is anti-people and anti-workers and against the people of Delta state.
He added Delta workers have been managing to survive on fixed and small salaries, that they cannot train their children to school and for those that have managed to send their children, there are no industries to be gainfully employed.
He lamented that workers in the state struggle to survive.
The chairman recalled during his address said the federal government on 29th came out to announce subsidy removal and that the price of petrol had gone up to N520 in Delta state, which he said was too weigh beyond the reach of the average Deltans, workers, and Nigerians.
He said when the Nigeria Labour Congress was still battling that the federal and state government should provide palliative to workers, there was another increment of fuel to N617
He maintained that workers in Delta state use 70 percent of their salaries in transportation and that the price of goods and services have increased astronomically.
He noted that the primary purpose of government is the security and welfare of her people, adding “as we speak with you, sir, there is no security in the land, we cannot go to our villages to farm because herdsmen have taken over the bushesโ.
He continued “They are killing and kidnapping our people, we are dying, that is why we have come today to cry to the governor who is the father of this state, to take our message to the President of the country that they should stop the anti-people and anti-workers policiesโ.
The NLC chairman also worried at the silence of the state governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborewori over provisions of Palliative to workers, “We do not know when Delta state will give palliative, Delta state is very slow, why Delta state is silent on the matter, he had not said anything on palliativeโ.
While responding to the Delta state chapter of NLC, the Governor, who was ably represented by his special adviser on policy, Rt. Hon. Solomon Funkekeme assured that the state governor will present their concerns and issues to the President.
Adding that the governor is a man of the people and fully aware of his responsibilities to Deltans.
He said, “The concerns you have raised are not peculiar to workers only, it is a matter for all Deltans and Nigerians. We also have noted what you have said about Deltans, the governor is working very hard to get it done; NLC will be invited to talk, your inputs are needed, be rest assured.
