In a bid to ensure sufficient food in Nigeria, and reduce post-harvest losses in Agricultural products, the Federal Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (FMSTI) has collaborated with the Delta State Government, Ministry of Science and Technology.
The workshop slated for four days theme “Technology for Reduction of Post-Harvest Losses In Nigeria” took place in Asaba, Delta state capital, through the Department of Bio-resources Technology.
In her welcoming address, the commissioner for science and technology, Olorogun (Mrs.) Jennifer Adesan Efeviroro disclosed that the four-day workshop capacity is aimed at equipping farmers with the requisite knowledge and abilities in handling agricultural products.
She noted that the workshop couldn’t have come at a better time than now that the world is ravaged by different crises from food shortages as a result of the Russian/Ukraine war.
She commended the Federal Ministry of Science, Technology, for the vision, resourcefulness, and tenacity of purpose for extending the exercise to Delta State.
She revealed that the programme is the second of its kind and the first was organized in June in 2019, with the theme “Technology and Innovative Bio-resources Interventions To Improve Income And Livelihood” in which she said over one hundred youths and women were trained in fish farming, snail rearing, and grass cutter breeding and that the beneficiaries were given startup packs at the end of the exercise.
She noted that Delta state government understands Sen ( Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa’s numerous empowerment has been dish-out to youths in the state.
According to her, “Over the past eight years, her ministry, the job creation office, other agencies of government, the state government led by the visionary governor, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, has impacted meaningfully on the economy of the state.
She continued ” in entrepreneurial development index, creating jobs and improving the economic well-being of its citizens through the Information and Communication Technology Youth Empowerment Programme (ICT-YEP), Skill Training and Entrepreneurship Programme (STEP), Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurship Programme (YAGEP).
She thanked the state governor, His Excellency, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, who has demonstrated his uncommon passion for wealth creation and human capital development as a requisite for good governance, says the Okowa’s gracious and unalloyed support has given a good foundation for building businesses across the state.
She, however, charged the beneficiaries of the workshop to key in the exercise that they ( the beneficiaries) stand to gain immensely from the programme, adding that knowledge gained during the training will be very useful to them as a farmer or allied practitioners.
Adding “It will be a credit seeing you practice what you have learned during the workshop to the benefit of our dear state,”
