The Federal Government has announced a five-year suspension of its Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) scholarship programme, citing the need to strengthen local institutions and prioritise the welfare of Nigerian students.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Morufu-Tunji Alausa, made the announcement in Abuja on Saturday through a statement issued by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs. Boriowo Folasade.
According to Alausa, the decision followed a comprehensive review which revealed that all academic programmes currently pursued by Nigerian students abroad through the BEA scheme are now offered in the country—many at an improved standard.
“We have carefully reviewed all courses our citizens pursue abroad. Every single one is now offered here at home,” he said.
He explained that while the suspension encourages local education, it does not prevent parents from privately sponsoring their children overseas.
“The government currently spends significantly on tickets, stipends, and other costs to send students abroad for education they can now access at home, often at better quality,” the minister stated.
Alausa, however, clarified that Nigeria would still accept fully-funded scholarships from BEA partner countries, provided they cover tuition, accommodation, travel, healthcare, living expenses, and offer a monthly stipend of no less than $500—at no cost to the Nigerian government.
He also emphasised that the suspension will not affect other scholarship programmes such as the Nigerian Scholarship Award for students in public tertiary institutions, the Education Bursary Award for undergraduates studying Education, and the Presidential Scholarship for former NYSC members.
The minister noted improvements in the Nigerian Student Loan Programme, which now provides expanded financial support to students in local institutions.
He assured that current beneficiaries of the BEA scholarship will continue to receive full government support until they complete their studies.
“We stand by the promises made to our students abroad,” Alausa said.
Reiterating the government’s commitment, the minister affirmed that more local opportunities will be created to support students and ensure no educational aspiration is hindered.
