The Federal Government, through the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), is set to embark on a $750 million World Bank-funded project to provide electricity for 17.5 million Nigerians.
The REA’s Managing Director, Abba Aliyu, announced the upcoming initiative during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily program on Thursday.
The project, tagged the Distributed Renewable Energy Scaleup, is designed to expand electricity access in rural areas using renewable energy sources.
Aliyu emphasized that the initiative, slated to begin in November, is among the most ambitious electrification projects globally.
“For example, there’s a new project that we are starting next month called the Distributed Renewable Energy Scaleup project, which is a $750 million financed project by the World Bank.
The target of that project is to electrify 17.5 million Nigerians, and I must say that this is one of the most ambitious projects in the world based on my understanding,” he said.
Aliyu further highlighted that Nigeria’s goal to electrify millions aligns with global efforts to ensure energy access for all, pointing out that India is the only other country with a similarly large-scale electrification drive.
The Distributed Renewable Energy Scaleup project will utilize renewable energy sources to achieve its goals, making it a sustainable solution for rural communities.
This move is part of the government’s broader strategy to promote cleaner energy and reduce the country’s dependence on traditional power grids.
In addition to the rural electrification project, Aliyu revealed that the REA has plans to introduce cost-effective renewable energy solutions to tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
