A heart-wrenching incident unfolded on Christmas Eve in Akwa Ibom State, where the residence of the late State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Obong Udo Ekpenyong, was ravaged by fire in Ukanafun Local Government Area.

The tragic inferno, which occurred on the eve of Christmas celebrations, resulted in the demise of Mrs. Elizabeth Udo Ekpenyong, the wife of the late PDP chairman, and her sister, Miss Ofonime Frank, as confirmed in a statement issued by Mr. Udeme Idiòng, the Secretary of the Transition Committee of the Local Government Area.

While the cause of the fire was not disclosed in the statement, it outlined that Hon. Godwin Ekpe, the Transition Committee Chairman of the council, has declared a seven-day mourning period for all indigenes of Ukanafun LGA, extending from December 26 to January 1, 2024.

Furthermore, seeking empathy and support, the council chairman, in collaboration with stakeholders and with the approval of the state government, decided to withdraw Ukanafun’s contingent from the ongoing Christmas unplugged activity originally scheduled for December 28.

The statement expressed deep condolences to the grieving family, offering prayers for the peaceful repose of the departed souls.

The community mourns the loss of valuable lives during what was meant to be a joyous festive season.
