In a devastating incident early Wednesday morning, a fierce fire engulfed the Kwalema Small Scale Rubber Recycling Industries at Dakata, Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, reducing over 200 factories to ashes.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the extensive damage and financial losses estimated to be in the millions of naira. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported.
Chairman of the industries, Alhaji Aminu Abubakar, confirmed the tragic destruction of all factories in Sections B and C of the market. “Everything is destroyed; only wreckage remains,” he lamented.
Abubakar speculated that an electrical fault or spark may have triggered the blaze, which originated in a factory in Section B before rapidly spreading to Section C.
“The fire was so intense that neither our efforts nor the delayed arrival of the nearby fire service, located just 2 kilometers away, could contain it,” Abubakar recounted.
“By the time they arrived, it was too late, and they struggled with insufficient water supply to quell the flames.”
Eyewitnesses described the fire’s rapid progression, noting how it resisted initial containment efforts and swiftly spread to neighboring factories.
“It continued to engulf sections until it had consumed everything in its path,” one worker recalled.
Victims like Alhaji Ahmed Ya’u and Abdulkadir Muhammad Aliyu recounted their staggering losses, with Ya’u estimating his losses at over ten million naira in materials and contracts.
Despite the devastation, many expressed resilience and faith, attributing the incident to a test from God.
Confirming the incident, the Kano State Police Command expressed sympathy for the affected individuals and reassured that an investigation into the cause of the fire had been initiated.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, emphasized the importance of preventive measures to forestall future occurrences.
Meanwhile, the Kano fire service spokesperson, Saminu Yusuf Abdullahi, confirmed the absence of casualties and stated that investigations are ongoing to ascertain the cause of the fire.
