A kuwiat News media has marked a new frontier in media innovation with its introduction of the first AI generated news presenter.
Kuwait News, an affiliate of the Kuwait Times, unveiled the AI-generated news presenter named “Fedha”.
The media posted a video to their Twitter account over the weekend showing the computerised anchor introducing “herself” as “Fedha”.
Fedha appears as an image of a woman with light-coloured hair, wearing a black jacket and white T-shirt, and addresses the audience in Arabic.
Deputy editor-in-chief for Kuwait News, Abdullah Boftain, shared that the introduction of Fedha is an experiment to explore the potential of AI in creating new and innovative content.
“I’m Fedha, the first presenter in Kuwait who works with artificial intelligence at Kuwait News. What kind of news do you prefer? Let’s hear your opinions,” said Fedha, introducing herself to the audience.
Mr Boftain further explained that Fedha may evolve to have a Kuwaiti accent and read online news bulletins, adding that the name “Fedha” was chosen as it is a popular, old Kuwaiti name that refers to silver, the metal.
“We always imagine robots to be silver and metallic in colour, so we combined the two,” he said.
Fedha’s appearance, with her blonde hair and light-coloured eyes, reflects the diverse population of Kuwaitis and expatriates in the country, according to Mr Boftain.
The use of AI-generated news presenters is not entirely new, as China’s state news agency unveiled its own virtual newsreader in 2018.
The introduction of AI-generated news presenters comes at a time when there is increasing debate about the impact of AI on the job market.
A recent report by investment bank Goldman Sachs highlighted that AI could potentially replace 300 million full-time jobs, with the technology expected to take over a quarter of work tasks in the US and Europe.
However, the report also suggested that AI could lead to the creation of new jobs and a productivity boom.
As technology continues to advance, the media landscape is evolving with the integration of AI-generated content.
Fedha’s debut as Kuwait’s first AI-generated news presenter is a testament to the growing influence of AI in shaping the future of media and journalism.
