The Ogun State community and Nigerian public service have been thrown into mourning following the death of Deaconess Doyinsola Ogunbiyi, a pioneering public servant and the first female Commissioner for Works and Housing in Ogun State.
Ogunbiyi passed away peacefully on November 11, 2024, at the age of 68, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, trailblazing achievements, and selfless service to her community.
In an official statement, the Ogunbiyi and Adesina families shared their profound sorrow over the loss of their matriarch, lovingly called “Nana D” by family and friends.
Her children, Oluwatosin, Oluwatobiloba, Boluwatife, and Olaoluwa, expressed gratitude for her life and its impact, emphasizing her role as a devoted mother, grandmother, and sister, as well as a figure of wisdom and kindness to many.
Deaconess Ogunbiyi’s career was marked by remarkable firsts and an unwavering commitment to public service.
She began as a broadcaster with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Abeokuta, quickly establishing herself as a prominent voice in public relations.
She broke barriers in Ogun State’s government, serving as a commissioner across three ministries, with her appointment as the first female Commissioner for Works and Housing setting a milestone for women in government.
Her influence extended into the corporate and nonprofit worlds, where she served as chairperson on several boards, advocating for both infrastructural development and social welfare.
A tireless community activist, Deaconess Ogunbiyi contributed significantly to Ogun State’s social landscape.
She held the lifetime position of Matron at the Ijamido Motherless Babies Home, a role through which she championed the rights and welfare of orphaned children.
She was also the convener of Voice of Ogun Women, a platform dedicated to addressing issues affecting women’s rights, empowerment, and welfare in the state.
Her compassion and advocacy extended far beyond her official capacities, as she mentored countless young professionals and served as a beacon of support within her community.
Her life’s work, which combined public service with philanthropy, earned her Fellowships at numerous professional institutes.
Despite her various achievements, she remained humble and focused on serving those around her, her warmth touching the lives of many who had the privilege to know her.
While the family prepares to celebrate her life and contributions, they have requested privacy to grieve their loss.
They also stated that burial arrangements and details of the homegoing celebration will be shared in due course, as friends, colleagues, and admirers prepare to honour her indelible legacy.
The family has also invited tributes and condolences on a memorial page dedicated to her, providing an opportunity for people to remember and celebrate the life of an extraordinary woman.
Deaconess Doyinsola Ogunbiyi will be fondly remembered not only for her groundbreaking career but also for her kindness, generosity, and steadfast dedication to uplifting her community. May her soul rest in perfect peace.
