Fish Sellers In Ogun Protest Soaring Prices, Call For Government Action

On Tuesday, members of the Fish and Seafood Sellers Association of Nigeria in Abeokuta gathered outside the Governor’s office, holding placards and voicing their concerns through anti-government songs.

They were expressing their frustration with the continuous rise in fish prices.

Owolabi Onajobi, the state chairman of the Association, lamented the relentless surge in fish prices, which has forced many of their members out of business.

He stressed that the escalating prices were negatively impacting their livelihoods, and customers were holding them responsible for the arbitrary hikes.

Onajobi appealed to the government to address the economic hardship caused by the increasing prices of commodities. He stated, “Many of us are closing our businesses because we can’t sustain losses.

For instance, a carton of Titus, which used to cost N45,000, now sells for N87,000. We can’t continue like this, which is why we’ve come to the governor to share our concerns.

The government should look into this to prevent our businesses from collapsing. We are burdened with significant debt, and this hardship is overwhelming.”

Adijat Adeleye, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, spoke on behalf of the government and urged the traders to be patient, emphasizing that the fish price increase is not unique to Ogun State.

She remarked, “To my knowledge, this issue is not exclusive to Ogun State; fish sellers from other states are also facing price hikes. The problem of fish prices is a national concern, and a comprehensive approach is needed to address it.”
