The Ogun State Police Command has arrested five hunters in connection with the tragic death of a colleague, Taiwo Bolugbe, who was fatally shot during a hunting expedition in the Ajinawo area of Yewa North Local Government Area of the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Omolola Odutola, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, said the fatal accident occurred around 3 pm on Sunday.

According to Odutola, Bolugbe’s Dane gun accidentally discharged while he was attempting to retrieve a hunted animal, leading to his untimely death.

“The accident occurred around 1500hrs when the victim, Taiwo Bolugbe, attempted to retrieve a hunted animal.

His Dane gun reportedly slipped from his shoulder, discharged accidentally, and fatally struck him in the neck and lower jaw,” Odutola stated.

Despite efforts by fellow hunters to save him, Bolugbe succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Odutola said the police were alerted at about 4:30 pm, prompting the immediate arrest of five hunters who were linked to the incident.

She added that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough investigation.

The police spokesperson urged hunters and firearm handlers to exercise extreme caution to prevent such fatal accidents.

“The Command reiterates its warning on the responsible handling of firearms, particularly during hunting expeditions, to avert avoidable tragedies,” she said.
