Tragedy struck in Adamawa State as torrential rains triggered flash floods that claimed three lives and displaced no fewer than 1,415 households across 13 communities in Yola North and Yola South Local Government Areas.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in a statement issued Thursday, confirmed that the disaster, which followed hours of downpour on Tuesday, also left more than 40 residents injured while farmlands and key infrastructure were submerged.
According to NEMA, a joint rapid assessment conducted with the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) revealed widespread destruction of homes, livelihoods, and food sources.
The agency said hundreds of affected families are now stranded, with many forced into temporary shelters in host communities while others have been relocated to the Girei flood resettlement camp.
“Urgent humanitarian needs identified include food, shelter, medical support, and clean water,” the statement read.
“We are working closely with ADSEMA, local emergency committees, and humanitarian partners to cushion the impact of the disaster and provide timely assistance to affected populations.”
The agency also urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and comply with early warning advisories as the rainy season reaches its peak.
Only two months ago, at least 25 people were killed and over 5,500 displaced by a similar flood disaster in Yola and surrounding communities, raising concerns about the state’s vulnerability to climate-related emergencies.
Local sources said that farmers in the affected areas are already counting heavy losses, warning that the destruction of farmlands could worsen food insecurity in the region.
