The Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, Professor Adewale Musa-Olomu, has revealed that the hospital now handles 25% of all open heart surgeries conducted in Nigeria.
This achievement, he noted, is a testament to the facility’s upgraded medical equipment and the efforts of its highly skilled surgical team.
Prof. Musa-Olomu made this disclosure during a courtesy visit by the Executive members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, led by its Chairman, Comrade Akinwale Olanrewaju.
The meeting took place at the FMC’s Idi-Aba, Abeokuta office on Friday.
Speaking during the visit, Prof. Musa-Olomu emphasized that the FMC Abeokuta has become a critical player in Nigeria’s healthcare sector, especially in the field of cardiac surgery.
“When I took over, I recognized the urgent need for open heart surgery and worked tirelessly to secure qualified surgeons, despite the scarcity of such specialists in Nigeria,” he stated.
He further highlighted that the centre’s success in attracting these professionals has allowed it to deliver life-saving cardiac care to many Nigerians.
Musa-Olomu drew attention to the financial burden placed on patients seeking heart surgeries abroad, stating that surgeries in countries like Ghana and Ivory Coast cost upwards of $100,000.
However, at FMC Abeokuta, the same procedures can be performed at a much lower cost, averaging around N10 million, making it more accessible to Nigerians in need of cardiac treatment.
Despite the significant achievements, the Medical Director stressed the need for greater public awareness about the hospital’s capabilities.
He called on the media, particularly the NUJ, to assist in spreading the word to ensure more Nigerians benefit from these affordable, high-quality services.
In response, the Chairman of the NUJ Ogun State Council, Comrade Wale Olanrewaju, praised the rapid development of the hospital under Prof. Musa-Olomu’s leadership, particularly over the past seven years.
He noted that the facility’s improvements have not only enhanced the quality of healthcare available to Nigerians but have also significantly reduced the need for overseas medical trips.
Olanrewaju reaffirmed the importance of maintaining strong collaboration between the FMC and the media, pledging the continued support of journalists in promoting the hospital’s services and achievements.
