Workers and staff of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, have called on the Federal Ministry of Health to caution medical directors in government hospitals against undue interference in the appointment of directors, urging the government to ensure fairness and transparency in the process.
The call followed recent controversies surrounding the appointment of the new Director of Administration at FMC Abeokuta. A viral report, titled “FMC Abeokuta: Staff Bicker Over New Director of Admin, Seek Reversal”, alleged dissatisfaction among staff over the selection of Mr. Exodus Kehinde Apanisile as the new director.
However, speaking on behalf of aggrieved workers, Mrs. Atitebi Temitayo, a medical records officer at the hospital, discredited the report, describing it as false and defamatory.
She clarified that she had no involvement in any political or propaganda activities, refuting claims that she authored the story.
“I have never engaged myself in any political or propaganda activities,” Atitebi stated. “I am a female health worker, and the published story misrepresented my identity.”
A senior medical practitioner at FMC Abeokuta, who requested anonymity, explained that the selection process for the new Director of Administration followed due process in line with public service rules.
“After the retirement of the former Director of Administration, Mr. Adeyemi Oluseni, the vacancy was advertised. Qualified candidates applied, and both oral and written interviews were conducted for over three applicants,” the source disclosed.
The source noted that Mr. Exodus Kehinde Apanisile emerged as the best candidate after the rigorous selection process.
“Contrary to the rumors, Mr. Apanisile holds a degree in Mathematics Education but has also acquired advanced administrative qualifications. He has written three books, one of which is used in Abeokuta for staff promotions,” the source added.
“As far as FMC Abeokuta is concerned, staff and members are happy with Mr. Apanisile’s appointment. The Federal Ministry of Health reviewed all qualifications and selected the most suitable candidate,” the source said.
Staff members expressed optimism about the new administration, urging Mr. Apanisile to prioritize government policies and public service rules while avoiding favoritism.
“My advice to Mr. Apanisile is to remain focused and deliver effectively,” the source concluded.
FMC Abeokuta workers have urged the Federal Ministry of Health to strengthen its oversight to ensure transparency in key appointments across government hospitals.
They argued that undue interference by medical directors could disrupt service delivery and demoralize staff.
They called for a unified focus on improving healthcare services for the benefit of the community and the nation at large.
