The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, has dismissed claims circulating on social media that anti-snake venom was unavailable during the treatment of late fast-rising musician, Ms Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene, who died after a snake bite.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the hospital’s Head of Clinical Services, Dr Bioku Muftau, said the medical team acted promptly and professionally on the patient’s arrival, administering emergency care, including resuscitation, intravenous fluids, oxygen therapy and polyvalent anti-snake venom.
Muftau explained that Nwagene, who sustained the snake bite on January 31, 2026, died from severe neurotoxic complications associated with the venom, despite aggressive medical intervention.
“Our medical staff provided immediate and appropriate treatment upon her arrival. Anti-snake venom was administered, and all standard emergency protocols were followed,” he said.
He added that plans were already underway to transfer the patient to the Intensive Care Unit when her condition deteriorated suddenly, leading to cardiac arrest.
“Despite intensive resuscitation efforts, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the medical team was unable to revive her,” Muftau stated.
While condoling the bereaved family and fans of the late singer, the FMC official described her death as tragic and painful, stressing that allegations of negligence or non-availability of anti-venom were “unfounded and misleading.”
“We stand by the quality of care delivered by our team. The narrative suggesting that anti-snake venom was unavailable or that the response was inadequate does not reflect what actually transpired,” he said.
Muftau urged the public to rely on verified information from credible sources rather than unconfirmed social media reports, assuring that the hospital remains committed to transparency, professionalism and patient safety.
The death of Nwagene had sparked outrage online, with several users alleging systemic failures and shortages of essential medical supplies in public hospitals.
However, FMC Abuja insisted that all necessary clinical measures were taken in her case.
