…At Least 25 Officers To Face Court-Martial
Security agencies investigating the foiled coup against President Bola Tinubu’s administration have uncovered evidence that suspects procured at least 32 vehicles — including Volkswagen Golf cars and SUVs — to facilitate covert operations across strategic locations nationwide.
Highly placed security sources tsaid that military investigators recovered documentary trails linking the purchases to operatives involved in the plot, including receipts, transaction records and logistics deployment plans.
The vehicles were allegedly used to move personnel discreetly, gather intelligence and access sensitive locations such as airports and public facilities without arousing suspicion.
One of the sources said, “The vehicles were acquired deliberately to blend into everyday traffic and enable reconnaissance and coordination across multiple states.
The financial and procurement records are now part of the evidence against the suspects.”
The investigation has reportedly identified a retired major general, named Adamu, as a key figure in the network.
He is said to have evaded arrest, alongside at least three other suspects who are currently on the run. Intelligence sources disclosed that one of them was traced to South America, though his precise location has not been officially released for security reasons.
Multiple security agencies, including military intelligence units, the State Security Service (SSS) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), are now working jointly to dismantle remaining cells linked to the plot, with cross-border intelligence cooperation and surveillance ongoing.
Preparations for prosecution have also reached an advanced stage. Sources within the defence establishment said authorities are awaiting presidential approval to formally constitute a court-martial panel to try the indicted soldiers.
“At least 25 military officers and personnel are expected to face trial over their alleged roles in the coup attempt,” a security source disclosed. Several civilians suspected to have handled financing, logistics and coordination are also in custody and being interrogated by the EFCC and SSS.

Security officials say further arrests are imminent as investigators deepen probes into the funding channels, operational planning and wider networks behind the aborted plot.
Background
In October last year, security agencies arrested 16 military officers over an alleged plan to overthrow the elected government.
The plot, reportedly led by a serving colonel, Muhammed Ma’aji, was said to include plans to assassinate President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and other top government officials, while also targeting senior military commanders.
The alleged conspiracy, uncovered in late September 2025, led to the cancellation of Nigeria’s Independence Day parade, heightening national anxiety.
Initially, military authorities described the arrests as cases of “indiscipline and breach of service regulations,” attributing grievances to career stagnation and failed promotion examinations.
However, on January 26, the military formally confirmed that there was indeed a coup plot and announced that indicted officers would be arraigned.
Following the failed attempt, President Tinubu restructured the military high command, sacking the service chiefs and retaining only Olufemi Oluyede and Emmanuel Undiandeye, with Mr Oluyede later elevated to Chief of Defence Staff.
Security sources say the latest revelations about the procurement of covert vehicles underscore the scale, coordination and financial depth of the alleged conspiracy, as authorities intensify efforts to ensure that all those involved are brought to justice
