Foreign Minister, Tuggar Leads Nigeria’s Delegation To Africa’s 10th High-Level Seminar On Peace, Security

In a significant diplomatic move, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, is set to lead a high-level delegation to the 10th High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa, scheduled to take place from the 17th to 18th of December 2023 in Oran, Algeria.

The Special Adviser on Media to the Foreign Affairs minister in a statement said the  seminar, also known as the Oran Ministerial Process, will be chaired by the Minister of foreign affairs in Gambia  H.E. Dr. Mamadou TANGARA, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad of the Republic of The Gambia.

According to the statement,  Dr. Tangara serves in his capacity as the Chair of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) for the month of December 2023.

Expected to be attended by Ministers of Foreign Affairs from the 15 Member States of the AUPSC, along with Ministers from the current, outgoing, and incoming African Members of the United Nations Security Council, the seminar plays a crucial role in shaping Africa’s stance on peace and security matters on the global stage.

The AU Commission will be represented by high-ranking officials from the Political Affairs, Peace and Security Department, and the AU Observer Mission to the United Nations.

Algeria, as the host country, will also contribute senior government officials to the event, alongside representatives from the United Nations Headquarters and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).

Participating in the Seminar are Ambassadors and Experts from each PSC and A3 Member State in Addis Ababa, as well as various partners and “Friends of the Seminar.”

Notably absent from the attendees is Gabon, currently under AU suspension due to Unconstitutional Changes of Government.

The overarching goal of the High-Level Seminar is to ensure that newly elected African Members of the UNSC comprehend Africa’s peace and security contexts and positions on Afro-centric issues.

This year’s session, following the tradition of previous seminars, serves as a platform for the current and outgoing African UNSC members to share insights and experiences with the incoming members, namely Algeria and Sierra Leone.

As the 10th in the series, this year’s Oran process carries the theme, “Celebrating 70 years of progress and cooperation: A decade of transformation and innovation, reaching new heights together.”

The event will unfold in three segments: open, closed, and closing. Despite the three segments, the Seminar will only occur in open and closed formats/sessions.

The 10th High-Level Seminar marks a milestone in fostering collaboration, reflecting on past achievements, and charting the course for Africa’s future engagement in global peace and security efforts.

Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar’s leadership of Nigeria’s delegation underscores the country’s commitment to playing a vital role in shaping the continent’s narrative on the international stage.
