A Syrian national who had lived in Sokoto State for over four decades has died in a suspected suicide after reportedly ingesting mosquito insecticide at his residence in Gawon Nama Zaga Road, Sokoto metropolis.
The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed the incident, which occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
According to police sources, the tragedy came to light when a 16-year-old boy, Ahmad Aliyu of Gagi area—employed by the deceased—raised an alarm after finding his boss, identified as Abdulrahman Badenjki, allegedly drinking a substance later identified as Executor mosquito insecticide.
Aliyu was said to have rushed into a nearby mosque to alert worshippers before a distress call was placed to the Divisional Police Officer.
Police operatives who responded to the scene found Badenjki lying unconscious on his bed, with the insecticide container placed on a blue plastic chair beside him.
“The scene was photographed and cordoned off for investigation. The victim was immediately rushed to Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH), where he was confirmed dead on arrival by a medical doctor,” the Command stated.
The remains of the deceased have since been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy to determine the actual cause of death.
A senior officer confirmed to security analyst Zagazola Makama that the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (DC CID) has taken over the case for a “discreet and comprehensive investigation” to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Badenjki, described by neighbours as a long-time resident who had integrated into the community for over 40 years, reportedly lived alone at the time of the incident.
Police say further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
