The Federal Fire Service (FFS) Kamo State, has trained 50 repentant individuals, formerly associated with the notorious Boko Haram terrorist group.

Kano State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Muhammed Usaini Gumel commended the management team of the FFS for their role in training these individuals on fire safety techniques, transforming them into fire service ambassadors.
These 50 individuals are part of a larger group of 623 former thugs who received repentance and amnesty after renouncing their involvement in criminal activities and surrendering their weapons.
Sponsored by the Aminu Mohammed Magashi (AMG) Foundation, the training not only imparts essential fire safety skills but also provides monthly stipends for the first three months for each participant.
The AMG Foundation further unveiled plans to sponsor an additional 50 individuals to work as Sanitation Ambassadors under REMASAB, while 25 others have been drafted to work under the supervision of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Director of Kano State Youths Empowerment Programme, Comrade Yusuf Alhassan, revealed the state government’s plans to absorb all 623 repentant individuals through various Youth Empowerment Programmes, emphasizing the commitment to their reintegration into society.
The skills training, held at the Police Officers Mess Conference Hall in Bompai, Kano, concluded with participants being exposed to both theoretical and practical knowledge in effective fire safety.
Commandant Muhammed Lawal Falala of the Kano Commandant of NSCDC announced that 50 of the repentant individuals would be absorbed to assist the NSCDC in crime fighting.
Similarly, Alhaji Ahmadu Haruna Zago, Managing Director of REMASAB, pledged support for 25 of the individuals and expressed the organization’s commitment to providing further assistance.
In his remarks during the event, Commissioner Gumel expressed his satisfaction in witnessing the success of collective efforts towards providing a safe and secure environment.
He emphasized the significance of initiatives such as community policing in addressing the root causes of crimes and providing opportunities for redemption from a life of criminality.
Commissioner Gumel recalled the security challenges he faced upon assuming duty on May 2, 2023, highlighting the disturbing threats of mobile phone snatching, armed robbery, and thuggery.
Through a comprehensive policing strategy involving both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches, he witnessed a significant reduction in violence crime incidents in the state.
Acknowledging the holistic nature of security as a collective responsibility, Gumel urged all stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organizations, NGOs, and private sectors, to contribute to the support and encouragement of these individuals who have chosen to steer away from a life of crime.
He implored the 50 training beneficiaries to utilize this opportunity as a means to envision a brighter future, emphasizing that everyone possesses the potential to achieve greatness by embracing a positive mindset and setting ambitious goals.
Commissioner Gumel expressed profound gratitude to the Executive Governor of Kano State, His Excellency Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, for continued support in transformative community policing initiatives.
He commended the Federal Fire Service, Kano Command, AMG Foundation, and other key stakeholders for their diligent efforts, expressing hope that this training serves as a catalyst for the needed transformation and progress in Kano.
