Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has vehemently denied the widespread rumor of his demise, asserting that he is in no rush to meet his maker.
The 88-year-old Gowon was reported to be in London at the time when the unfounded rumor began to circulate rapidly throughout Nigeria.
This refutation came through a brief message conveyed to the media by his personal aide, Adeyeye Ajayi. In the statement, Ajayi quoted Gowon as saying, “I am still around and well. I am not in a hurry.”
The rumor of General Gowon’s passing sparked a frenzy on social media platforms, with many bloggers disseminating the false information, and it subsequently gained wide circulation on WhatsApp.
The catalyst for this rumor appears to have been a report on Sunday regarding the passing of another individual named Gowon – Prof. Samuel Gowon Edoumiekumor.
Prof. Samuel Gowon Edoumiekumor, a former Chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNUs) and a former Vice-Chancellor of Niger Delta University, passed away in Lagos early on Saturday, October 7, at the age of 53. His unfortunate demise was attributed to complications arising from lung cancer.
