A High Court in Zuba, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has sentenced dismissed Inspector Haruna Ocheni to 30 years in prison for the killing of a 17-year-old boy. Ocheni faced charges of culpable homicide not punishable by death.
In delivering the judgment, Justice Kezziah Ogbonnaya stated that the prosecution successfully proved the case beyond reasonable doubt, highlighting Ocheni’s lack of a legitimate reason to be in the deceased’s house.
Emphasising Ocheni’s 29 years of service as an Inspector, the court underscored his obligation to be well-versed in the rules of his profession.
Ocheni, who did not deny using the rifle, admitted to firing two bullets with the knowledge that it could result in death.
During the trial, Gabriel Chikezie, the deceased’s father, testified that Ocheni shot and killed his son following the theft of a generator from their home in Kubwa, Abuja, on March 15, 2020.
Seeking assistance, Chikezie contacted Ocheni, who arrived with a rope, tied the son’s hands, and, amid resistance, struck him on the head with a weapon before fatally shooting him.
Chikezie promptly took his son to Kubwa General Hospital, where the tragic death was confirmed.
The court’s decision reflects a stern response to misconduct, holding accountable those entrusted with public safety.
