In a surprising announcement that has left football fans in awe, former Super Falcons captain and striker, Desire Oparanozie, has officially retired from professional football at the age of 29.
The retirement was made public on Wednesday through her Twitter account, marking the end of an incredible era in women’s football.
Oparanozie, a key figure in Nigerian football, had recently been part of the historic Nigerian team that advanced to the second round of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
However, she has decided that now is the perfect moment to bid farewell to the beautiful game that has defined her life.
In a heartfelt message to her fans, family, and friends, Oparanozie expressed her gratitude for their unwavering support throughout her career.
She stated, “It’s time to take a bow, as I believe there’s no better time than now. I’m officially announcing my retirement from professional football for both club and country.”
She also extended her appreciation to her teammates, coaches, and opponents who had been part of her incredible journey. Oparanozie concluded, saying, “Thank you all for being part of this incredible journey. Thank you, football. Thank you, Nigeria.”
Oparanozie’s final appearance for the Super Falcons was a bittersweet one, as she missed a crucial penalty kick in the shootout that saw Nigeria bow out to England in the round of 16 at the 2023 World Cup.
Despite an intense 0-0 draw after 120 minutes of play, England triumphed 4-2 in the penalty shootout.
Desire Oparanozie made her debut for the Nigerian national team in 2010 and quickly rose to prominence as a key player.
She represented Nigeria in four World Cups and achieved glory by winning four Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) titles in 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018.
Her club career also took her to various corners of the globe, starting with Bayelsa Queens and later Delta Queens in Nigeria. She ventured into international leagues, showcasing her talent in Russia, China, and France.
Oparanozie’s retirement marks the end of an era in Nigerian women’s football, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered for years to come.
