Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola, the immediate past Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, emphasized the need for media self-regulation instead of government control during the first-year anniversary celebration and project commissioning by the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun Council.
The event, which centered around the theme “Security and Media: A partnership for national development,” featured a lecture delivered virtually by the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi.
Adejobi highlighted the dynamic nature of challenges and opportunities in the partnership between security forces and the media.
Ambassador Isola, who chaired the occasion, expressed concern about the pollution of both traditional and social media and urged media professionals to embrace self-regulation to restore the sector’s integrity.
He asserted that a self-regulated media would operate more professionally and earn the respect of society.
“I don’t believe in the government regulation of the media, but I believe in self-regulation…just for you to earn your respect and maintain a reputation.
Journalists are well respected across the world,” Isola stated, pointing out the historical significance of Ogun NUJ as the cradle of journalism in Nigeria.
Isola also cautioned against the abuse of social media and emphasized its role in networking and promoting positive narratives.
He called on journalists to report accurately with the mindset of protecting national security in the current global village.
During the virtual lecture, Adejobi underlined the crucial role of responsible journalism in holding security agencies accountable and ensuring public awareness of safety measures.
He acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed confidence that Nigeria could navigate them with determination and a united effort.
In his welcome address, the State Chairman of NUJ, ‘Wale Olanrewaju, highlighted the unity showcased in the past year, following four years of crisis and division among members.
He pledged to continue building on the achievements recorded and fostering stronger collaboration to explore endless potentials for journalists in the state.
