The House of Emmanuels Foundation has organised a scholarship examination for over 500 indigent students in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with a call on well-meaning Nigerians to support government efforts in funding education for vulnerable children.
The founder of the foundation, Mr Emmanuel Oluwachegoun Amos, made the appeal on Thursday during the exercise held at Lisabi Grammar School, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.
Amos said education remained a critical driver of national development, stressing that government alone could not shoulder the responsibility of providing access to quality education for underprivileged children.
“A nation’s future is built on the quality of education available to its young people. We cannot continue to leave everything in the hands of government. Those of us blessed financially must rise to support children whose only barrier to success is lack of school fees,” he said.
He noted that the initiative was borne out of his personal experience of financial hardship while growing up, which limited his access to education.
“I know firsthand what it means to be unable to pay school fees. I have lived through moments where dreams seemed uncertain due to lack of support. That experience shaped my resolve to give back by sponsoring the education of children in need,” he added.
The scholarship examination, which drew participants from Abeokuta South and Abeokuta North Local Government Areas, was conducted in an orderly environment, with the foundation providing examination materials and refreshments for students, parents and tutors.
Some of the students who participated in the exercise described the initiative as a rare opportunity that could positively impact their academic future.
Education stakeholders in the state also commended the programme, describing it as a laudable intervention aimed at improving access to education and supporting indigent students.
