Residents of Agbor, the Ika South Local Government Area headquarters in Delta State, were thrown into mourning on Sunday as a petrol tanker burst into flames, claiming four lives, injuring three, and destroying properties, including a FirstBank branch along Old Lagos/Asaba Road.
Eyewitnesses described the horrifying incident, which saw the inferno consume vehicles, houses, and business premises, leaving behind charred remains of victims and reduced buildings to ashes.
Viral videos showed frantic efforts by residents to douse the flames while waiting for firefighters to arrive.
“It was a terrible sight. The fire spread quickly, and people were helpless. We tried to assist, but there was little we could do,” said a witness, Mr. Chuks Ogwude.
Residents decried the late response of emergency services, linking the frequency of such accidents to poor road conditions and negligent monitoring of petrol tanker operations.
“We have seen many accidents on this road because tankers are not properly monitored. The government must ensure safety measures are put in place,” lamented a resident, Mrs. Ebele Chiejine.
Confirming the tragedy, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended his condolences to the bereaved families.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor described the incident as “horrifying.”
“It is with a heavy heart that I commiserate with the people of Ika South Local Government and the affected families.
“This tragic incident is deeply saddening. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones at this difficult time,” the statement read.
Governor Oborevwori also assured residents of swift government action to provide support for the injured and the families of those who died.
He directed relevant agencies to ensure that the injured receive adequate medical care and pledged financial and emotional support to affected families.
The governor praised the Delta State Fire Service, local residents, and security agencies for their prompt response to the disaster, despite criticisms from some residents over delays.
“I appreciate the swift response of our fire service, security agencies, and the good people of Ika South who rallied to put out the fire and support the victims. Your selflessness and courage in the face of such a disaster are commendable,” he said.
The disaster left several structures in ruins, with smoke still billowing from the scene hours after the fire started.
Residents called for stricter regulations on tanker operations and improvements in road infrastructure to prevent similar occurrences.
