Four Nigerian students have been sentenced to prison in the United Kingdom for their involvement in a violent street brawl in Leicester City centre that left an 18-year-old man with stab wounds.
The convicts, identified as Destiny Ojo, Joshua Davies-Ero, Ridwanulahi Raheem, and Habib Lawal, all aged 21, engaged in the fight at approximately 3:00 a.m. GMT on November 4, 2021.
Weapons used during the altercation included knives, a baseball bat, and a crutch, according to evidence presented during a six-week trial at Leicester Crown Court.
The Leicestershire Police, in a statement released on Monday, detailed how the suspects were tracked down.
“After the suspects left the scene, police enquiries carried out over the following few months included CCTV analysis, phone work, and public appeals which led to identifications being made,” the statement read.
The altercation was captured on CCTV, revealing the students’ use of weapons during the fight. Davies-Ero was spotted wielding a crutch, Ojo held a baseball bat, while Lawal and Raheem were each seen carrying large knives.
The victim, an 18-year-old man, required hospital treatment for stab wound injuries sustained during the fight.
At the sentencing on Thursday, the court handed Ojo a seven-year prison term for violent disorder, attempted grievous bodily harm, and committing grievous bodily harm with intent.
Lawal received a five-year sentence for similar charges. Raheem was sentenced to three years in prison for violent disorder and possession of a bladed article.
A fifth individual, identified as Asamoah, had earlier pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article and is scheduled for sentencing on Friday.
The Leicestershire Police condemned the actions of the defendants, stating that their behavior had caused significant harm and distress in the community.
This incident highlights the growing concern over violent crime and weapon possession among youths in urban areas, both in the UK and beyond.
