Four security operatives, including two soldiers and two members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, have been killed in a fresh ambush by terrorists in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State.
The Nigerian Army confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Appolonia Anele.
Anele said troops of the 25 Task Force Brigade were returning from a routine patrol around Wajiroko in Azir Multe when insurgents opened heavy fire on their convoy near the fringes of the Sambisa Forest.
The patrol team, led by the Commander of the 25 Brigade, Brig.-Gen. M. Uba, reportedly fought their way through the coordinated ambush, forcing the terrorists to retreat.
“During the encounter, two brave soldiers and two heroic CJTF members paid the supreme price while on active service to the nation,” the statement added.
According to the Army, the troops’ superior firepower disrupted the attackers’ mission and prevented further casualties among security personnel and civilians within the area.
The military high command commended the troops for their gallantry and extended condolences to the families of the deceased.
The attack came barely 24 hours after the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Kelvin Aneke, reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to intensifying operations against terrorists and other criminal groups threatening national security.
Aneke, during an operational visit to the Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA at the 213 Forward Operating Base in Katsina, vowed that ongoing air and ground operations would be deepened to secure communities across the North.
The latest incident underscores the persistent threat posed by remnants of insurgents operating within the Sambisa axis despite sustained military offensives.
