Fresh Attacks:  LG Chair Raises Alarm  As 20 Killed In Benue

The Chairman of Gwer West Local Government Area in Benue State, Ormin Torsar Victor, has expressed deep frustration over fresh attacks in the area that claimed over 20 lives, including that of a two-year-old child.

The attacks, allegedly carried out by suspected herdsmen, occurred across several communities, including Aondana and Tewa Biana—just metres from a military base.

In an emotional video statement, Torsar described the killings as unbearable, questioning the failure of security agencies to respond despite the proximity of military personnel.

“They say the local security doesn’t have the mandate to engage these people, that only the federal government can give that mandate. So should my people continue to die while we wait?” he asked tearfully.

Torsar disclosed that entire families had been wiped out, lamenting the recent burial of a man and his two adult sons in Tewa Biana.

He also mentioned that Aondana, where most of the casualties occurred, is the hometown of prominent individuals, including the former First Lady of the state, Mrs Eunice Ortom.

“I don’t care about being chairman anymore. Look at a child of two years old butchered—it’s too much for me to condone,” he said.

He called on the federal government to act decisively to stop the killings and protect lives in the region.

Benue has witnessed recurring clashes and attacks in rural communities, with local leaders consistently raising alarm over what they describe as inadequate federal response.
