Former Governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili, has commended Governor Siminilayi Fubara for his boldness in resisting attempts by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to allegedly turn the state into his personal estate.
Odili made the remark during a Christmas Ballard organized by his family in honour of Governor Fubara and his family.
The event, held in Port Harcourt, featured various performances and celebrations to appreciate Fubara’s resilience and leadership qualities.
The former governor lauded Fubara for what he described as “unusual fortitude” in confronting what he termed an unnecessary political battle initiated by Wike to capture the state.
“It is now over 12 months since the 25th of October, 2023, when a fierce existential fight, though unnecessary, was waged against Governor Fubara over the soul of Rivers State,” Odili said.
“With assuring fortitude, Governor Fubara confronted the challenge, prevented the quest by one man to capture the state as a private estate, emancipated Rivers people, steadied governance, and made civil servants and Rivers people happier as it used to be until I left office in 2007.”
In his response, Governor Fubara credited his triumph over the political crisis to divine intervention.
He described God as the ultimate liberator who ensured victory for the state and its people during a period of intense political antagonism.
“God has proved Himself worthy as the Ultimate Liberator of the state and its people because He ensured total triumph over the political crisis and those behind it,” Fubara said.
The governor noted that the support of Rivers people gave him strength and a new perspective on leadership. “It is not me being strong. My strength is drawn from every one of you that is here. You gave me encouragement; you do the work for me; you make the calls for me. So, why won’t I stand up for you?”
Fubara assured residents of a brighter future, promising that his administration would continue to deliver remarkable progress.
He expressed optimism for a prosperous 2025, building on the successes achieved so far.
“The excitement experienced among Rivers people during the Christmas celebrations is indicative of a brighter future ahead,” he said.
“We are determined to make every succeeding year better with remarkable records of progress.”
The governor also praised “true leaders” and well-meaning Rivers people for standing firm against tyranny and oppression.
He vowed to uphold the right values in governance, ensuring that Rivers State remains on the path of development and unity.
