The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has again underscored its growing influence in Nigeria’s higher education system with the appointment of one of its senior Registry officers, Mrs Emilomo Joy Alawode, as the new substantive Registrar of McPherson University, Seriki-Sotayo, Ogun State.
Alawode, a Deputy Registrar at FUNAAB, was appointed by the Board of Trustees of McPherson University, making her the institution’s third substantive Registrar and further highlighting FUNAAB’s reputation as a training ground for top university administrators across the country.
A seasoned administrator, Alawode brings decades of experience in academic administration, governance, human resource management, public relations and digital communication to her new role.
She previously served as the pioneer Visiting Deputy Registrar of McPherson University in 2012, where she was instrumental in setting up the institution’s administrative structures, strengthening staff coordination and improving student records management.
During that period, she also established the university’s first official news bulletin, MCU Echo, laying the foundation for structured internal and external communication.
At FUNAAB, Alawode has worked across several strategic units of the Registry, overseeing records for more than 17,500 students and 3,500 staff during key academic sessions.
Her deployment of digital administrative tools reportedly improved operational efficiency by over 60 per cent.
She has also worked closely with the Senate and Governing Council of both FUNAAB and McPherson University, contributing to policy development, institutional reforms and governance processes.
As Head of the Academic Staff Establishment Unit at FUNAAB, she pioneered the use of electronic meeting folders for the Appointments and Promotions Committee, significantly reducing paperwork and delays.
She also served twice as substantive Head of the Directorate of Public Relations, where she redesigned the university bulletin and expanded readership and engagement by over 40 per cent.
Her tenure in public relations also saw her play a key role in strengthening FUNAAB’s national visibility and laying the groundwork for its official presence on social media platforms.
An accomplished scholar, Alawode holds two Master’s degrees in International Communication from Leeds Beckett University, United Kingdom, and Vilnius University, Lithuania, as well as a first degree in Classics and Linguistics from the University of Ibadan.
She is currently pursuing a doctorate with research focused on digital literacy and women’s economic empowerment.
Beyond Nigeria, she has been active in global academic and technology circles, serving as a former Volunteer Director of Women Who Code, Barcelona, an educator with SheAI, and a part-time lecturer at the Swiss School of Management, Barcelona.
Her appointment was conveyed in a letter signed by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of McPherson University Governing Council, Rev. (Dr.) Babatunde Idowu, who said the decision reflected the university’s commitment to excellence, innovation and people-centred administration.
Reacting, the Vice-Chancellor of FUNAAB, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, described Alawode’s appointment as a testament to her professionalism, diligence and exemplary service, adding that the university remained proud of its tradition of producing administrators who make significant contributions to higher education development nationwide.
Meanwhile, findings showed that no fewer than 18 FUNAAB staff members have been appointed as principal officers in various institutions within and outside Nigeria in the last three years, further reinforcing the university’s growing footprint in the country’s tertiary education leadership landscape.
