In a resounding call for change, the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has once again emphasized the imperative of restructuring as the optimal solution to address Nigeria’s pressing issues.
Expressing his views at the 10th World Congress of Oodua Progressives Union (OPU) held in Osogbo, Osun State, Adams, who leads the Odua Peoples Congress (OPC), underscored the current challenges facing Nigeria and asserted that restructuring is the key to overcoming them.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Adams asserted, “The only solution is restructuring and true federalism.”
He specifically called on President Bola Tinubu to take decisive steps in implementing true federalism as a means to combat the prevailing insecurity in the nation.
Adams, drawing on Tinubu’s past governance in Lagos State, reminded him of the critical role he played in advocating for true federalism.
He urged the President to pay heed to the wisdom offered by opinion leaders, emphasizing the need for tangible actions that would propel the nation forward.
“As one of the country’s opinion leaders, we must remind Tinubu about the need to restructure. He should remember when he was the governor of Lagos State. He is an apostle of federalism,” Adams remarked.
The Aare Onakakanfo expressed the global stance of OPU, stating, “OPU as a global organization also believes in restructuring as the best political ideology.”
He argued that restructuring would empower federating units, allowing them autonomy to develop at their own pace—a crucial step toward addressing the structural imbalances within Nigeria.
Adams concluded by invoking a Yoruba adage: “To get water from a rock, you must keep hitting it.”
He emphasized the need for persistence and acknowledged past shortcomings in economic policies and security strategies, asserting that restructuring remains the beacon for progress in the nation.
