The German government, with strong support from the parliament, has officially granted permission for citizens to smoke cannabis.
The new legislation specifies a daily possession limit of 25 grams for individuals in public places and 50 grams in private places.
The decision, following a robust debate in the Bundestag, on Friday, saw 407 votes in favor and 226 against.
While proponents argue that the law protects cannabis users and disrupts illegal markets, critics like Simone Borchardt express concerns about potential health risks for young people.
However, Health Minister Karl Lauterbach, while supporting this emphasized the need to address the growing use of black market cannabis among the youth.
He stressed that the aim is to ensure product safety, reduce organized crime involvement, and safeguard users.
The approved regulations, slated to take effect on April 1, apply exclusively to individuals aged 18 and above.
