In a pivotal address during a sectoral debate organized by the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, underscored the critical role of good governance in addressing the prevailing issue of insecurity in the nation.

General Musa highlighted, “We have realized that the magic wand to address insecurity is good governance. Anywhere you have good governance, insecurity goes down.”

He emphasized that while the security forces play a crucial role, accounting for only 30 percent of the solution, the broader issue requires a comprehensive approach.

“The security forces can only produce 30 per cent. We can only provide an enabling environment. If other aspects are not addressed, it is a problem,” he remarked.

The General drew attention to the underlying socio-economic challenges contributing to the security concerns, stating, “People can’t eat. People are hungry.

No matter how you tell them to keep the peace, they will not because they have to eat and it aids criminality.”

In his address, General Musa stressed the interconnectedness of governance, economic well-being, and security.

“So, we must have good governance, and everybody should have belief in the country that this is their country,” he asserted.

The Chief of Defence Staff’s comments resonate against the backdrop of increasing concerns about national security, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach that addresses both the immediate security issues and the root causes of instability.

As the nation grapples with these challenges, General Christopher Musa’s insights shed light on a path forward—one that prioritizes good governance as an indispensable tool in the fight against insecurity.
