The Plateau State Government has terminated the employment of a commercial driver over drug abuse.
This development comes as the state prepares to introduce locomotive train transport services to enhance public transit options.
The dismissed driver, who was discovered under the influence of drugs while transporting passengers from Jos to Abuja in one of the newly acquired Siena buses, was immediately recalled and subsequently sacked.
This swift action followed distress calls from concerned passengers and was confirmed by the state Commissioner for Transport, Gyang Davou.
Davou, addressing an induction ceremony for new Special Corps marshals of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Jos, detailed the incident.
He emphasized the gravity of the driver’s actions, noting, “You could imagine the number of lives he was playing with.
“ So, we immediately dispatched another vehicle and recalled the said driver. An ad-hoc committee reviewed the incident, leading to his termination.”
In a bid to further enhance the state’s transport infrastructure, Davou announced that the government has completed plans to introduce a locomotive train service in Jos, which will commence operations next week.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize and secure the state’s transportation system.
“The new transport management system we have started in Plateau will also address security challenges, including car theft. This public-private project aims to secure lives and properties.
Surveillance cameras have already been installed in key locations in Jos, and this pilot project will expand to 13 additional locations, including the state’s entry and exit points,” Davou explained.
The commissioner also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve road safety and reduce traffic accidents.
He commended the newly inducted Special Corps marshals, calling on them to support government initiatives to decongest the city and minimize crime.
“In the 2023 road safety campaign held in Jos, there was a notable reduction in road traffic accidents in Plateau State.
This achievement is largely due to the involvement of the Special Corps Marshals in public education and sensitization,” he said.
Babatunde Farinloye, the Sector Commander of the FRSC in Plateau State, also addressed the new marshals, urging them to dedicate themselves to their duties and adhere to the rules and regulations.
He emphasized the corps’ mission to eradicate road traffic accidents and maintain a safe motoring environment, guided by the values of transparency, fairness, and service orientation.
The induction ceremony saw 368 new Special Corps marshals decorated, with notable attendance from heads of other security agencies, including the state Commissioner of Police and the Commander of Operation Safe Haven.
This collaborative effort underscores the state’s commitment to enhancing public safety and transportation efficiency.
