Former interim chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and ex-governor of Osun State, Chief Bisi Akande, has alleged that the Nigerian government was behind the assassination of Chief Bola Ige, the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. Chief Bola Ige was tragically killed 24 years ago in his home in Ibadan.
In an exclusive interview on Edmund Obilo’s podcast, State Affairs, Chief Akande recounted chilling details surrounding Ige’s untimely demise.
He disclosed that a mutual friend, Oluwole Rotimi, had warned Ige about the dangers of resigning from President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, suggesting that it could endanger his life.
“I don’t know. He was killed in Oyo State while I was ruling in Osun State. The government killed him (Bola Ige). It was a state murder,” Akande asserted during the interview, emphasizing the severity of his claims.
Akande further elaborated on the events leading up to Ige’s decision to resign, citing a phone call where Ige expressed his intention to step down from his ministerial role.
Despite efforts to dissuade him, Ige ultimately resigned, a decision that Akande believes ultimately led to his tragic fate.
“Lam Adesina, who was the Chief Security Officer of Oyo State then, went to court, and Ladoja withdrew the case from court.
He might know more and be able to tell you,” Akande added, suggesting there could be more to uncover regarding the circumstances of Ige’s assassination.
Chief Akande also shared insights into Ige’s relationship with President Obasanjo, suggesting a strained trust that may have influenced Ige’s decision-making process.
“Ige had the backing of Afenifere and the now-defunct Alliance for Democracy (AD) before accepting a ministerial role under Obasanjo,”
Akande recalled, highlighting the political backdrop against which Ige’s resignation and subsequent assassination occurred.
Chief Bola Ige, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and a former governor of old Oyo State, was murdered in his home on December 23, 2001. His assassination remains a contentious issue, with calls for justice echoing through the years since the tragic event.
