Justice Mary Peter Odili (retd), Chair of the Body of Benchers, issued a stern caution to lawyers on Wednesday, advising against addressing the media post-court proceedings, deeming the action unethical.
This admonition came during the second day of the Call to Bar Ceremony, where 4,412 new lawyers were inducted in Abuja.
Justice Odili, a retired Supreme Court justice, revealed the formation of a committee dedicated to addressing the concerning issue of conflicting court judgments nationwide.
Impelling the newly sworn-in lawyers to exemplify the highest professional ethics, Justice Odili stressed the importance of honorable behavior at all times.
She further emphasized honesty, discouraging any attempts to mislead the court, and urged adherence to the judicial dress code.
Highlighting the issue of media trials as a challenge plaguing the country, Justice Odili expressed concern over the negative impact on fair and unbiased trials.
She underscored the unethical nature of lawyers addressing the media, particularly after court sessions, warning against potential influence on public opinion and justice proceedings.
Justice Odili cited Rule 33 of the Rules of Professional Conduct, stating the inappropriateness of lawyers addressing the press on pending court matters.
She clarified that such actions, whether fully robed or not, go against ethical standards and can prejudice or interfere with fair trials.
In conclusion, the Chair of the Body of Benchers emphasized the crucial role lawyers play in upholding the integrity of the legal system and preserving public trust.
