The Nigerian Association of Social and Resourceful Editors (NASRE) has issued a stern condemnation of reported illegal mining activities occurring within the premises of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), located in Ile Ife, Osun State.
Expressing solidarity with affected students, faculty, and staff members, NASRE emphasized the urgent need for authorities to address this alarming issue.
The group underscored the importance of conducting thorough investigations to assess the extent of these illicit operations and to hold those responsible accountable.
It emphasized that the safety and well-being of the university community must be prioritized.
In a statement released by the group’s media director, Lateef Owodunni, on Wednesday, NASRE demanded answers regarding the oversight of such ecological devastation.
“NASRE echoes the call for immediate intervention to halt these illegal activities, preventing further environmental damage and protecting the local populace,” the statement read.
“We emphasize the importance of maintaining academic integrity and adherence to regulations.
“The university community should not be subjected to such flagrant disregard for the law.”
NASRE urged relevant authorities, including the university management, the Federal Ministry of Environment, and the Ministry of Solid Minerals, to collaborate on launching a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
The group stressed the necessity for perpetrators to face legal consequences to deter future transgressions.
Furthermore, NASRE encouraged international organizations to provide support in addressing this pressing issue, recognizing its implications for environmental sustainability and public health beyond the local community.
Reaffirming its commitment to advocating the rights and welfare of all Nigerians, NASRE pledged to closely monitor developments at OAU.
The group called on all stakeholders to unite in protecting educational institutions and ensuring a prosperous future for the nation.
