In a notable humanitarian gesture,a Non Governmental Organisation,  De Norsemen Kclub International has secured the release of three inmates at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The organization also paid for the examination fees of inmates preparing for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC), National Examination Council (NECO), and General Certificate of Education (GCE).

This intervention took place on Tuesday, as part of the club’s annual worldwide service to humanity on October 15.

Speaking to journalists at the event, the International President of De Norsemen Kclub, Chief Engr. Chidi Bishop Anokwu, explained that the club’s initiative is part of a larger goal to secure the release of 100 inmates across Nigeria who have been detained due to their inability to pay fines.

Anokwu highlighted the plight of assumed innocent inmates and emphasized the need for thorough investigations before trials.

“We decided that this year, we would focus on Abeokuta, not only to pay fines but also to help with school fees for WAEC, NECO, and GCE exams. Our target is to release 100 inmates across Nigeria,” Anokwu said.

He acknowledged that while others may engage in similar acts of goodwill, the current economic situation in Nigeria has made such contributions more difficult.

Anokwu further commended the authorities at the correctional facility, noting that despite the challenges, the staff has done well in managing the inmates.

He urged other organizations to step in and alleviate the suffering of inmates across the country.

In his remarks, the Superintendent of the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Ayoola Opadeji, praised De Norsemen Kclub for their efforts.

He confirmed the payment of fines for three inmates and the donation of N350,000 for the NECO fees of female inmates.

“I really appreciate what De Norsemen International has done. They have paid fines for three inmates and supported our female wing with N350,000 for NECO exams.

“It’s a remarkable gesture, and our students have promised not to let them down,” Opadeji stated.

He called on other organizations to follow the example set by De Norsemen, stressing the importance of community support in the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates.

Opadeji also highlighted the efforts being made to decongest the correctional facility, with 1,569 inmates currently housed there.

He encouraged the government to further promote non-custodial measures like community service and speedy trials to alleviate the strain on custodial centers.

The event is part of De Norsemen Kclub’s broader campaign to foster social justice and provide second chances to marginalized individuals across Nigeria, with similar activities carried out in states like Akwa Ibom, Imo, and Borno.

PLATFORM TIMES reports that with this initiative, the organization hopes to inspire others to take action and contribute to creating a more just and compassionate society.
