Controversial Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has invoked a fierce divine curse on individuals he accused of sponsoring the lingering insecurity ravaging parts of the country, declaring that Nigeria’s banditry and terrorism crisis is being deliberately fuelled by powerful interests.
In a viral video sermon delivered in Hausa on Wednesday, Gumi prayed that Allah’s wrath should continuously descend on political actors, military officers, and businessmen allegedly profiting from the violence plaguing the North-West and North-Central regions.
“May Allah curse whoever is sponsoring insecurity in this country, whether they are politicians, military officers, or businessmen,” the cleric declared. “May Allah’s anger never depart from their homes until they repent or perish.”
Gumi, who has over the years maintained that Nigeria’s insecurity has “hidden hands” behind it, insisted that the killings and kidnappings are not merely criminal enterprises but a coordinated scheme benefitting certain powerful elements within and outside government.
“If these sponsors think they are untouchable, let them wait for the punishment of Allah,” he said. “The blood of innocent villagers, women, and children they have caused to be shed will never allow them peace in this world and the hereafter.”
The fiery pronouncement has ignited widespread reactions across social media. While some Nigerians hailed the cleric for what they described as “speaking truth to power,” others criticised him for heightening religious tension and questioned why he continues to avoid naming the alleged sponsors despite repeatedly claiming to know them.
The video has since intensified public debate on the unresolved question of who benefits from Nigeria’s multi-billion-naira insecurity economy—an issue that has lingered amid rising attacks in the northern region.
