Gunmen on Tuesday evening abducted a former member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Moruf Musa, at Ibiade, Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of the state.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that Musa, who served as Majority Leader of the Assembly between 2007 and 2011, was kidnapped at about 7pm while observing evening prayers inside a mosque located within his compound.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the Chairman of Ogun Waterside Local Government, Mr Ganiyu Odunoiki, said the former lawmaker was seized by armed men who also reportedly attacked residents along nearby roads.
“The report is true. The former lawmaker was abducted on Tuesday evening. The gunmen also reportedly shot some people on the road,” Odunoiki said.
He disclosed that security agencies, working with members of the community, had launched a coordinated search operation in the area.
“We are combing the surrounding bushes with police officers. We are also expecting the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, while the Area Commander from Ogbere is already on ground,” he added.
A security source told PLATFORM TIMES that the victim struggled with his abductors for over 20 minutes, a situation that drew the attention of residents before the kidnappers fired sporadically into the air to force their escape with him.
Also confirming the abduction, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the command was aware of the incident and had activated necessary security measures to secure the victim’s safe release.
“The Ogun State Police Command is aware of the reported abduction of Hon. Moruf Musa in Ibiade, Ogun Waterside Local Government Area. Security measures, including the deployment of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, have been activated,” Babaseyi said.
He urged members of the public to remain calm, assuring that the police would provide updates as investigations progress.
As of the time of filing this report, efforts to rescue the abducted former lawmaker were ongoing, while residents of the community expressed fear over the growing spate of kidnappings in the area.
