Panic has gripped a village in Oyo State after gunmen stormed a mosque on Monday night and abducted a worshipper during prayers.
The victim, identified as Amadu Usman, was taken away around 9 p.m. when about seven armed men invaded the mosque while he was praying alongside his elder brother, Adamu Usman.
Security analyst, Zagazola Makama, confirmed the incident, saying the attackers whisked Amadu away to an undisclosed location, leaving worshippers in fear.
Following the abduction, a combined team of security operatives, including the Amotekun Corps, local vigilantes and hunters, immediately launched a manhunt for the suspects.
They have since been combing surrounding bushes in search of the victim and his abductors.
Residents of the area, who spoke in hushed tones for fear of reprisals, described the incident as shocking and a further sign of worsening insecurity in the state.
One resident said: “We have never experienced such a thing before. To enter a mosque during prayers and take someone away is frightening. People are now afraid to even gather for prayers at night.”
As of press time, neither the police nor the Oyo State Government had issued an official statement on the abduction.
The incident adds to the growing wave of kidnappings and violent attacks that have unsettled communities across the South-West in recent months.
